TV 8K resolution Global standards set

The South Korean tech giant said 15 other partners with Samsung Electronics specified global standards to define key performance characteristics of 8K TVs aimed at expanding the ecosystem.

The 8K Association, a global non-profit organization of TV and panel makers, the systems-on chipmaker and content business, has announced standards and performance specifications.

The association has 16 member companies including Samsung Electronics, AUO, Panasonic, HWS and TCL. Samsung Display has also joined the group.

The latest high-resolution standards - for content creation, distribution, and television displays - enable resolutions over 33 million pixels, which is four times faster than the UHD and 4K standards.

By definition of association, an 8K TV should have a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels and an input frame rate of CPU, 30p and 60p frames per second. Peak display luminance exceeds 600 units.

It has set HDMI 2.1 as the 8K interface and HEVC as the main codec. A compliance test set will also be developed enabling a transparent testing process.

The association plans to promote a logo for 8K TVs that meets or exceeds newly defined technical standards.

"Defining key features for 8K TV specialties reflects the association's focus on promoting the development of next-generation video technology," said association executive director Chris Chinock.
