Independence Day 2019: The day of 15 August is celebrated as Independence Day across India. India got independence from British rule on this day in 1947. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, played an important role in giving independence to Hindusta. But you will not know that Mahatma Gandhi was not in this celebration when India got independence. Then he was in Noakhali, Bengal, thousands of kilometers away from Delhi, where he was fasting to prevent communal violence between Hindus and Muslims. 1. On 15 August 1947, when India got independence, the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi could not attend this celebration, because then he was in Noakhali, Bengal, thousands of kilometers from Delhi, where he was communal between Hindus and Muslims. They were fasting to stop the violence.

2. On the midnight of 14 August, Jawaharlal Nehru gave his historic speech 'Trist with Destiny'. This speech was heard by the whole world but Mahatma Gandhi did not listen to it because he went to sleep early that day.

3. Every year on Independence Day, the Prime Minister of India hoists the flag from the Red Fort, but it did not happen on August 15, 1947. According to a research paper of the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Nehru hoisted the flag from the Red Fort on August 16, 1947.

4. The border line between India and Pakistan was not determined until 15 August. This was decided on 17 August by the announcement of the Radcliffe Line which laid the boundaries of India and Pakistan.

5. India became independent on August 15, but at that time it had no national anthem of its own. Although Rabindranath Tagore had written 'Jana-Gana-Mana' only in 1911, but this national anthem was made only in 1950.

6. South Korea, Bahrain and Congo also celebrate Independence Day on the 15th of August. However, these countries were independent in different years 1945, 1971 and 1960 respectively.

7. It was Lord Mountbatten who personally decided the day of August 15 for the independence of India as he considered this day extremely fortunate for his tenure.

8. Apart from India, three other countries also celebrate Independence Day on 15 August. South Korea was liberated from Japan on August 15, 1945. Bahrain was liberated from Britain on 15 August 1971, and France from Congo on 15 August 1960.

9. On August 15, 1947, Lord Mountbatten worked in his office. In the afternoon, Nehru handed him the list of his cabinet and later addressed a gathering at the Precision Garden near India Gate.

10. On August 15, 1947, 1 rupee was worth 1 dollar and gold was 88 rupees 62 paise per 10 grams.
